Treasured family photos and wednesday nostalgia
Posted on Sep 23, 2009 in photography

I’m not sure if scanning old family photos is the best way to preserve them for future generations. I’ve been reading a lot about digital archiving recently and I wonder what’s going to happen to all the photos in my Flickr account when I die. Should my children have access? What if some nuclear disaster or alien attack completely wipes out all the binary data, pixels and bitmaps? What’s going to happen when compact discs follow cassette tapes into extinction?
These are the things that keep my head spinning on its axis and keep me awake at night.
But regarding the photo depicting my mother, grandmother, aunts and uncles in Germany just before WWII, my own mother could not remember the date when asked. I figured it to be around 1941 or 1942. It’s before my Onkel Klaus was born in 1945 and the youngest before him was Tante Rita who was born in 1938.
My own mother is the tall one in the back row born in 1931.
Pictured from left to right are Tante Klara, Tante Trude (my mother’s twin sister), Tante Rita (the little one in front), Oma Spöth, Tante Dora, my mother, Margarete and Onkel Hardi who died last year.
Nostalgic family photographs like this one may or may not become a regular feature on this blog, replacing the Wednesday Doodle for now. My life has rapidly expanded recently and I just got hired by REI in Berkeley. If you’re in the vicinity, stop in and say hello.

Woo! Woo? I am amused that some of those facial expressions are familiar despite not knowing the people in the photo.

Such a lovely family photo — what a treasure.
I wonder the same thing sometimes about my photos and I’ve often thought about how to “archive” digital prints for future generations.

Love the photo…I also recognize your face in some of the ones in the photo. And congrats on the job – REI seems to be a great place to work. I would love to be surrounded by so much outdoorsy stuff all day.

Aloha from the North Shores of Kauai.
Finishing up a week’s vacation here, they have a knit shop in Hanalei and I’ll be heading to the knit night this evening.
Wanted to say “Yeah” on the job at REI and good location Berkeley. I think the first time I was in an REI it was in Berkely when I visited my sister and camped while checking out grad schools in the Bay area.
Aloha,
Anne
