Hi. I just stumbled on to your blog this afternoon. You’ve created a really nice space! I listen to audiobooks ALOT — but never while I’m driving or knitting lace. In those situations, I get too distracted. But I do listen while knitting everything else (although I turn the iPod off when I need to concentrate). I also like to listen to audiobooks when I’m doing unpleasant tasks — like cleaning, laundry, and putting away groceries!

This happens to me ALL the time. I’ve listened to certain chapters of Ross King’s Michelangelo and the Pope’s Ceiling over and over again and I have a scattershot understanding of them. I listen when I walk or drive or ride the bus ( I really like the bus because I can knit). I tend to listen to podcasts – I especially like to listen to WNYC’s Radio Lab and NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me. I loved Middlesex and hope you enjoy it as well

I can listen to audio books in the car, sometimes (doesn’t work so well for short trips) and while sewing or knitting. But if I’m at home I do occassionally stop sewing or knitting and start reading online without remembering to turn off the audio book and that leads to loosing my place. I generally don’t get distracted while reading.

I totally have the same problem with listening to books on CD in the car. I’ve tried numerous times and have given up. It is just ever so slightly better when I’m home and knitting, but then I find it harder to concentrate on the knitting! And I often just fall asleep. Hopeless. Love your blog and all the socks you knit.

It is an excellent book as far as reading it goes. I don’t know about listening to it on cd. I find that the “voice” of who is reading is usually more of a distraction than the sound of my own voice when I read a book.

I love to read and can get completely wrapped up in a book, but I have never been able to get into books on CD. Especially while driving. My mind, too, will start to wander. I have never tried while knitting, though, but I imagine I would have the same problem. Probably the same reason why I am not really into “talk” radio … they just seem to drone on and on and on …

Yes, that’s why I *don’t* listen to books on tape/cd! I’m too easily distracted.

This is a great book, btw. Read it years ago.
