New Sock Book: Socks From the Toe Up by Wendy Johnson

Socks from the Toe Up by Wendy Johnson

Yesterday I splurged on Wendy Johnson’s new book, Socks from the Toe Up. It’s not often that I pay full price for a book, even a knitting book but I absolutely LOVE the socks in the book and I just had to have it. I adore those socks on the cover.

It’s a gorgeous book with many beautiful patterns that I’m anxious to get started on however I am a wee bit disappointed that the garter stitch short row heel is not included among the featured heel techniques. The short row heel continues to be my achiles heel as it were. I have yet to conquer that technique to my satisfaction but perhaps it’s just me being too hard on myself.

Don’t get me wrong – this book comes HIGHLY recommended from me. You’ll love it especially if you’re an obsessive sock knitter like me. I’m often asked why I knit socks so much (and also what I DO with all the socks I knit. Simple. I give them to family, friends and myself!) :-) . When it comes to socks, it’s all about technique. Learning new techniques keep me engaged and I think socks are the perfect little project to experiment with new techniques. I like to try something new with every pair I knit. That keeps it interesting.

So after splurging on the book, I bought some cheap sock yarn at Michael’s with a 40% and a 50% off coupon. $6.00 for a pair of handknit socks? That’s a steal to be sure. Now I have two color ways of “Heart & Sole” in the sock stash.

“Tequila Sunrise”

and “Mellow Stripe”.

I spent most of yesterday with my dear friend Mary lending my support as she purchased a new computer. She bought an iMac – hooray! – and loves it so far. Another convert to the fold.

One last thing to report. With a heavy heart I share that Kay Gardiner, one half of Mason Dixon Knitting, has lost her husband. My thoughts and prayers go out to Kay and her family.

  1. Love the yarn! I definitely want that book. Maybe I’ll sneak by the LYS tomorrow and see if they have it. Gah, or I can just be good and wait. I have UFOs to finish. :P
